As a Sheriffs Communications Dispatcher, you will be the steady voice behind non-emergency calls, ensuring accurate documentation and supporting the vital work of the Sheriffs Communications Center and Court Services. This class differs from the Sheriffs Emergency Services Dispatcher in that the latter is primarily responsible for operating radios to dispatch Sheriffs patrols and other emergency-related response services.
You will be the first point of contact for non-emergency calls to the Sheriffs Office. Your responsibilities include:
Youll be part of a dedicated communications team that works collaboratively to support field deputies, court officers, and administrative staff. While the role is primarily remote and flexible, youll stay connected through secure systems, occasional in-person meetings, and regular team briefings.
As a Sheriffs Communications Dispatcher, your calm professionalism and precise communication during non-emergency calls play a vital role in keeping operations running smoothly. You help coordinate resources, maintain accurate records, and offer reassurance to the publicstrengthening the efficiency and responsiveness of the Sheriffs Office in service to our community.
All candidates must pass the Criti-Call performance test and complete the POST-certified Public Safety Dispatchers Basic course within twelve (12) months of appointment.
STEP 1 : Complete the online application form. If successful in the initial screening, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm accuracy and qualification.
STEP 2 : Candidates place on the eligible list will complete the online CritiCall performance exam.
STEP 3 : Successful candidates proceed to a Pre-Screening Interview/Orientation and selection interview.
STEP 4 : Candidates may be invited to an HR interview and background investigation.
STEP 5 : Remaining background investigation steps include a computer voice stress analysis exam and medical examination.

Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, a thorough background investigation will be conducted.
Qualified applicants will be placed on a nine-month employment list based on scores received during evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
The County of San Diego offers preferential credits for military service to assist qualified applicants in transitioning from military to civilian careers.
Under California Government Code Sections 3100 - 3109, public employees are designated as disaster service workers. The term "public employees" includes all persons employed by the state or any county, city, state agency, or public district. Disaster service workers are required to participate in such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them by their employer or by law.
